2027 is coming: how VeriFactu affects you as a psychologist

This isn't a last-minute update or a one-off announcement; it’s already built into how every practice and clinic using Eholo handles billing. In this article, we’ll explain exactly what this regulation is, what changes in 2027, and why, if you use Eholo, this transition will be completely effortless for you.

What is VeriFactu (and why are you going to start hearing about it)?

VeriFactu is the common name for the Regulation on Electronic Invoicing Systems, approved by the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT).

When software is described as "VeriFactu compliant," it means it meets the technical requirements mandated by this regulation: every invoice must be recorded in a traceable way, cannot be altered without leaving a trail, and must be verifiable—in the VeriFactu model, this is done by immediately sending the record to the Tax Agency.

Simply put: it’s not enough to just "create an invoice." You need a complete system that guarantees, invoice by invoice, the integrity, preservation, accessibility, readability, traceability, and inalterability of every record, as required by the AEAT itself.

VeriFactu is not a new tax or a separate application. It is an auditable way of ensuring that billing software does not allow for the manipulation or concealment of invoices.

The date every freelancer (and every psychologist) should have marked on their calendar

Here is the part that really affects you: starting in 2027, VeriFactu compliance will no longer be optional; it will be mandatory for freelancers and SMEs—and that includes psychologists and psychology centers that bill as freelancers.

The specific deadlines are:

• Before January 1, 2027, for corporations.
• Before July 1, 2027, for all other taxpayers—this is where most freelance psychologists and centers fall.

Those already using the SII system or the regional tax regimes of the Basque Country and Navarre are exempt.

In other words: if you are a freelance psychologist or run a center, this change directly affects you. The question is no longer if you will have to comply, but rather which tool are you going to use to do it.

Why this matters more in mental health than in other sectors

In mental health, billing is not just a routine task: there are individual sessions, packages, different series, and invoices for patients as well as for companies or insurance providers. Each of these invoices also contains information linked to a patient—so how that billing is managed and recorded is not a minor technical detail. It is part of the trust you offer to those you treat.

Having a system that is auditable and VeriFactu-compliant is not just about "being up to code." It is about taking that responsibility seriously and consistently, as part of the normal operation of your practice or clinic—not as a last-minute obligation.

What lies behind "VeriFactu compliance" (and what you don't have to manage)

VeriFactu compliance is not just about adding a stamp to an invoice. It means the software:

• Generates a billing record — including the issuer, recipient, number and series, date, amount, taxes, and a reference to the previous record via a hash.
• Includes a verifiable QR code — on every full or simplified invoice, with a URL to the AEAT electronic office.
• Guarantees immutability — no invoice can be modified or omitted without leaving a trace.
• Communicates with the Tax Agency — immediately in the VeriFactu mode, or through other requirements in the non-VeriFactu mode.
• Correctly excludes those who are not required to comply — such as those already in the SII or regional tax regimes.

It is demanding precisely because it is continuous: it is not enough to comply once; every invoice issued, at any time, must continue to meet these requirements.

Why this is no longer "your problem" with Eholo

Here is the good news: if you already use Eholo, all of this is already taken care of. We have been VeriFactu-compliant for some time, not because the law forces us all to be yet, but because we believe your billing should be in order now, not at the last minute in 2027.

If you are a freelance psychologist, this means you won't have to learn the technical side of the regulations, rush to switch tools as the deadline approaches, or take on the risk of errors or penalties for missing the cutoff.

If you run a clinic, this is even more relevant: there are more professionals invoicing, more series, and more types of clients—and therefore, a greater need for the system, rather than each individual, to ensure compliance.
